Parish Guides:
The Society has started publishing a series of Parish Guides as A5 books. The purpose being to assemble in a single book a list of the main records of each Parish in our area and where they can be found. We have used our local knowledge of the many repositories and record centres available for the Greater London area to create Guides to the different districts, towns, villages and hamlets in our area. They are named after Ancient Parishes because these were the organisational hubs which generated the records that family historians need. (Civil Parishes took over from Ancient Parishes in the 1860s, followed by Urban District Councils in 1894 and then London Boroughs in 1965.) Each Guide lists the well-known sources of information, with dates covered and whether records are also online, together with more unusual archives which might contain mentions of ancestors. A new guide is being published every two months so those not yet done will be coming out in quick succession.
Those currently available are listed alphabetically in our online shop.
For the City of London our Guides will be arranged into Wards as the parishes involved are tiny. Work on them will begin once the Ancient Parish set is complete.
Monumental Inscriptions:
The Society has now published five A5 books in this series: Chipping Barnet, East Barnet, Hornsey, Monken Hadley, St James Hampstead Road. Each containing the monumental inscriptions from the Parish church and/or graveyard including illustrations, plans and a surname index.
All are available in our online shop.
1851 Census Guides:
The Society has also published two census guides naming streets from the 1851 census returns: The Streets of Westminster and The Streets of the City of London.
Both are available in our online shop.
Our Journal Metropolitan:
Our journal, called METROPOLITAN, is published quarterly and issued free to all members of the Society. As well as articles on family history, regular items include the latest entries in our members & surname interests directory, letters to the editor, news from record offices, recommended reading and book reviews, diary dates and forthcoming meetings.
